The minimally invasive TMR technique

The TMR technique is a minimally invasive procedure created to repair abdominal hernias located at the midline (ventral hernias). It is based on the well-known principles of the open surgery combined with the benefits of laparoscopy (video-surgery). The surgery starts with the insufflation of gas into the abdominal cavity using needles and cannulas. After that all the adhesions are taken down and the hernia defect is exposed. A linear stapler is then used to close the defect and reconstruct the entire midline. Prosthesis is placed behind the muscle to avoid recurrence and reinforce the abdominal wall. At the end little stiches are applied to the skin to provide optimal cosmetics.

  • 4-5 small incisions are made lateral and inferior.
  • Gas is insufflated into the abdominal cavity and the adhesions are taken down.
  • Stapler is used to close and reconstruct the abdominal wall.
  • A large mesh is placed behind the muscle to secure the closure
  • All the incisions are closed.
